Which 1987 stock-market crash is associated with the Dow Jones Industrial Average's biggest one-day percentage fall?

The story behind the answer

The 1987 stock-market crash is associated with Black Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average's biggest one-day percentage fall.

On October 19, 1987, the Dow dropped 508 points, or 22.6%. Major markets around the world also fell, making the event an international crash rather than an isolated Wall Street disturbance. The decline followed sharp market weakness earlier in October.

Researchers have identified several contributing factors, including investor anxiety, expensive share valuations, computerized trading, portfolio insurance, and international economic tensions. The crash is often confused with the 1929 collapse because both are called “Black” market days, but the 1987 fall was much larger as a one-day percentage decline in the Dow. The market later recovered, and the crash did not produce a depression on the scale of the 1930s.
