Which 1987 crash was called Black Tuesday in Hong Kong after the Hang Seng Index plunged?

The story behind the answer

The 1987 crash called Black Tuesday in Hong Kong after a plunge in the Hang Seng Index was the 1987 stock market crash.

A wave of selling spread across international markets in October 1987. Hong Kong’s exchange suffered an especially severe decline, and trading was suspended for several days from October 20 to October 23. When the market reopened on October 26, the Hang Seng Index fell 33 percent in one session.

The shock was connected to global investor fear, computerized trading strategies, portfolio insurance, currency tensions, and concerns about overvalued shares. The Hong Kong sell-off was part of the same worldwide episode as the U.S. market collapse commonly called Black Monday.

The naming can cause confusion. In Hong Kong, October 19, 1987 was widely associated with Black Monday, while October 26 was called Black Monday or Black Tuesday in different accounts because of local trading dates and time zones. The underlying event remains the global 1987 crash.
