Harold Faltermeyer’s 1984 instrumental one-hit wonder from Beverly Hills Cop was “Axel F.”
Faltermeyer composed and performed the electronic theme for the film Beverly Hills Cop, whose central character is Detroit detective Axel Foley. The title uses the character’s first name rather than describing the musical style or a location.
Released as a single in 1985, “Axel F” became an international hit and reached number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. Its bright synthesizer melody became one of the most recognizable film themes of the 1980s. Faltermeyer was already an experienced composer, arranger, and session musician before the song’s success.
The track is often confused with other 1980s film themes, especially “The Heat Is On,” which also appeared on the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. “The Heat Is On” was performed by Glenn Frey, while “Axel F” is an instrumental credited to Faltermeyer.
