Which 1980s Barbie line connected fashion dolls with a fictional girl band?

The story behind the answer

Barbie and the Rockers connected Barbie fashion dolls with a fictional girl band.

Mattel introduced Barbie and the Rockers in 1985 as a music-and-fashion concept. Barbie was presented as the lead singer of a touring rock group, and the dolls wore brightly colored performance costumes inspired by the spectacular stagewear of the 1980s. The line included instruments and accessories that supported the band theme.

The idea extended beyond individual dolls. Mattel released related playsets and animated specials, giving the collection a fictional music world as well as a coordinated wardrobe. This made the line a notable example of Barbie fashion being linked to entertainment branding.

Barbie and the Sensations is a separate later band concept from 1988. Teen Talk Barbie was a talking doll, not a musical group, while California Dreams Barbie is not the name of this Mattel band line.
