Which 1979 song by The Knack became the band’s only US number-one hit?

The story behind the answer

The Knack’s 1979 song “My Sharona” became the band’s only US number-one hit.

The song was written by guitarist Berton Averre and singer Doug Fieger, who drew inspiration from Sharona Alperin, a teenager Fieger dated. Averre developed the distinctive guitar riff, while Fieger supplied much of the lyric and melody.

“My Sharona” was released as The Knack’s debut single and quickly became one of 1979’s biggest hits. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks and helped the group’s debut album, Get the Knack, become a major commercial success.

The Knack later placed other songs on the charts, but none matched “My Sharona” in the United States. The song is frequently treated as a one-hit-wonder example, although the band had additional international recognition and later minor chart appearances.
