The 1979 science-fiction horror film with the tagline “In space, no one can hear you scream” was Alien.
Directed by Ridley Scott, Alien follows the crew of the commercial spacecraft Nostromo after they investigate a mysterious signal on an apparently deserted world. Their discovery of a seemingly harmless egg leads to the emergence of a lethal extraterrestrial creature that stalks the ship’s crew in confined, industrial surroundings.
The film starred Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley, alongside Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto. Its screenplay was written by Dan O’Bannon, from a story by O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett. The creature design by Swiss artist H. R. Giger helped give the film its distinctive biomechanical appearance.
The tagline appeared prominently in the film’s marketing and captures Alien’s central fear: isolation without rescue. The line was written by Barbara Gips, whose husband Philip Gips designed the poster. Alien is often grouped with later franchise entries, but the 1979 original is the film associated with this tagline.
