Which 1977 contest winner hosted SNL after the 'Anyone Can Host' contest?

The story behind the answer

Miskel Spillman was the 1977 contest winner who hosted SNL after the “Anyone Can Host” contest. She hosted the December 17, 1977, broadcast after winning NBC's unusual viewer competition.

Spillman was an 80-year-old German immigrant and grandmother from New Orleans. Contestants were asked to explain in 25 words or fewer why they should host the program. Her winning entry joked that she needed one more cheap thrill because her doctor had said she had only another 25 years to live.

Her episode made television history because Spillman was not a conventional celebrity, performer, or politician. She remains the only non-celebrity to host SNL, and for decades she was also the show's oldest host. Her record lasted until Betty White hosted at age 88 in 2010.

The answer is sometimes confused with actresses who hosted SNL during the 1970s, including Susan Saint James, Louise Lasser, and Mary Kay Place. Those women were celebrity hosts; Spillman was the ordinary viewer selected through the contest. She also remains the only person chosen through SNL's “Anyone Can Host” promotion.
