Which 1973 agreement created the Caribbean Community, commonly called CARICOM?
Answer
Treaty of Chaguaramas
Answer
Treaty of Chaguaramas
The Treaty of Chaguaramas created the Caribbean Community, commonly called CARICOM, in 1973.
The treaty was signed at Chaguaramas in Trinidad and Tobago by Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. It established the Caribbean Community and the Caribbean Common Market, creating a framework for regional economic cooperation.
CARICOM’s aims include coordinating economic policy, encouraging trade and supporting cooperation among Caribbean states. The original common-market arrangements were later developed into the Caribbean Single Market and Economy, although implementation has varied among members.
The Treaty of Chaguaramas should not be confused with the Treaty of Basseterre, which established the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States in 1981. Nor is it the same as the Treaty of Asunción, which founded Mercosur in South America.
