Stevie Wonder’s 1972 album Talking Book includes “Superstition” and “You Are the Sunshine of My Life.”
Released by Tamla on October 27, 1972, Talking Book was Wonder’s fifteenth studio album and a turning point in his artistic development. It is often grouped with Music of My Mind, Innervisions, and Fulfillingness’ First Finale as part of his celebrated early-1970s classic period.
“Superstition” opens the album’s funkier side with Wonder’s famous Hohner Clavinet riff, while “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” offers a warmer romantic contrast. Both became major singles: “Superstition” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and “Sunshine” later did the same.
A frequent mix-up is placing these songs on Innervisions, Wonder’s next album from 1973. Innervisions instead includes “Higher Ground” and “Living for the City.” Talking Book reached No. 3 on the Billboard pop albums chart and No. 1 on the R&B albums chart, helping establish Wonder as an adventurous, self-directed musician.
