Which 1972 American television special established Dick Clark as a New Year's Eve countdown host?

The story behind the answer

New Year's Rockin' Eve established Dick Clark as a New Year's Eve countdown host in 1972.

The program debuted as Three Dog Night's New Year's Rockin' Eve on December 31, 1972, and aired on NBC. It was created as a pop-music alternative to Guy Lombardo's long-running big-band New Year's broadcasts. Dick Clark hosted the special, which moved to ABC in later years and eventually became closely identified with him.

The show was renamed Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve for its second edition. Its format combined live or recorded musical performances with coverage of the Times Square ball drop, helping turn a local New York ceremony into a national television ritual.

Clark later handed the primary hosting role to Ryan Seacrest while continuing to appear until his death in 2012. The program has since used the title Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest, but its roots remain in the 1972 broadcast.
