Which 1969 event became the first human-crewed Moon landing?

The story behind the answer

Apollo 11 became the first human-crewed mission to land on the Moon in July 1969.

NASA launched Apollo 11 from Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969. Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin landed the lunar module Eagle in the Sea of Tranquility on July 20, while command module pilot Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit.

Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface first, followed by Aldrin. The astronauts collected samples, deployed scientific instruments, photographed the site, and spent about 21 hours and 36 minutes on the surface before returning to lunar orbit and beginning the journey home.

Apollo 8 had already carried humans around the Moon but did not land. Apollo 12, launched later in 1969, made the second lunar landing. These distinctions matter because several earlier missions achieved major milestones without placing astronauts on the surface.
