Which 1968 spaceflight first carried humans around the Moon?

The story behind the answer

Apollo 8 was the first spaceflight to carry humans around the Moon.

NASA launched Apollo 8 on 21 December 1968 with astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders aboard. The crew entered lunar orbit on 24 December and completed 10 orbits before returning to Earth on 27 December.

The mission was originally planned as an Earth-orbit test, but NASA changed it to a lunar-orbit flight as the agency prepared for a crewed lunar landing. Apollo 8 tested the command and service module far from Earth and provided important operational experience for later missions.

The crew photographed the far side of the Moon and made the famous “Earthrise” image. Apollo 8 did not land; Apollo 11 achieved the first crewed lunar landing in July 1969. Apollo 7 was the first crewed Apollo mission, but it stayed in Earth orbit, while Apollo 10 rehearsed the landing sequence in lunar orbit.
