Which 1966 Lamborghini is widely credited with establishing the modern mid-engine supercar layout?

The story behind the answer

The 1966 Lamborghini Miura is widely credited with establishing the modern mid-engine supercar layout.

Designed by Marcello Gandini for Bertone and engineered under the direction of Gian Paolo Dallara, the Miura placed its V12 engine transversely behind the passenger compartment. This arrangement concentrated mass near the center of the car and helped create the balanced handling expected of a high-performance sports car.

Lamborghini unveiled the production version at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show. Its dramatic styling, low nose, and powerful engine made it an immediate landmark in automotive design.

The Miura was not the first mid-engine road car. Earlier examples included the 1962 René Bonnet Djet and the 1963 De Tomaso Vallelunga. The Miura’s importance came from combining the layout with a powerful twelve-cylinder engine, striking styling, and series production, making the formula influential among later supercars.
