Which 1965 musical film won the Academy Award for Best Picture?
Answer
The Sound of Music
Answer
The Sound of Music
The Sound of Music was the 1965 musical film that won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Directed by Robert Wise, the film stars Julie Andrews as Maria, a novice governess who joins the household of widower Captain Georg von Trapp, played by Christopher Plummer. Set largely in Austria in the years before the Second World War, the story combines family drama, romance and musical spectacle with the growing threat of Nazi rule.
The film was adapted from the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical, which opened on Broadway in 1959. The movie added two songs, “I Have Confidence” and “Something Good,” written for the screen by Richard Rodgers after Oscar Hammerstein II's death. Its familiar songs include “Do-Re-Mi,” “My Favorite Things” and “Edelweiss.”
At the 38th Academy Awards, honoring films released in 1965, The Sound of Music won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. It is often confused with My Fair Lady, another acclaimed musical from the decade, but that film won Best Picture at the 37th Academy Awards for 1964.
