Which 1964 Western was an unofficial remake of Akira Kurosawa's 'Yojimbo'?

A Fistful of Dollars was the 1964 Western unofficially remade from Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo.

Directed by Sergio Leone, the film stars Clint Eastwood as the Man with No Name, a calculating gunslinger who enters a town divided between two rival factions. By encouraging the groups to fight one another, he turns a samurai-centered story into a lean, morally ambiguous Western and helped establish the style later called the spaghetti Western.

The connection to Yojimbo was not formally authorized when production began. Kurosawa and his production company Toho sued, and the dispute was settled out of court. Reports commonly state that Kurosawa received 15 percent of the film’s worldwide receipts, along with regional distribution rights.

A Fistful of Dollars also draws on older sources, including Dashiell Hammett’s 1929 novel Red Harvest and Carlo Goldoni’s play The Servant of Two Masters. It launched the Dollars Trilogy, followed by For a Few Dollars More in 1965 and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly in 1966.
