Which 1964 model launched Ford’s “pony car” class of affordable sporty cars?
Answer
Ford Mustang
Answer
Ford Mustang
The 1964 Ford Mustang launched the American “pony car” class of affordable sporty cars.
Ford introduced the Mustang at the New York World’s Fair in April 1964, although it was marketed as a 1965 model. It combined a long hood, short rear deck, sporty styling, and a relatively accessible price with components shared with the compact Falcon.
The formula attracted younger buyers and allowed customers to choose from numerous engines, body styles, and options. Ford sold more than 400,000 Mustangs during the first model year, far exceeding the company’s expectations.
The Chevrolet Camaro, Plymouth Barracuda, and AMC Javelin followed as competitors. They are often grouped with the Mustang as pony cars, but the Mustang is the model credited with establishing the category’s name and formula.
