Which 1962 U.S. stock-market sell-off is nicknamed the Kennedy Slide?

The story behind the answer

The 1962 U.S. stock-market sell-off nicknamed the Kennedy Slide was the Kennedy Slide.

The decline ran from late 1961 into June 1962 and ended a strong rise in American share prices. Investors became concerned about high valuations, slower economic growth, and corporate profit prospects. The market’s fall was intensified by uncertainty surrounding the investment climate and by sharp declines in leading growth stocks.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average reached a low on June 26, 1962, after losing roughly a quarter of its value from its earlier peak. The market later recovered, and the episode did not develop into a depression comparable to the 1930s.

The name connects the episode with President John F. Kennedy’s administration, but Kennedy did not cause the entire decline. The nickname also should not be confused with the much larger 1987 Black Monday crash or with the 1963 assassination of Kennedy.
