Which 1962 U.S. market collapse is also known as the Kennedy Slide?
Answer
Kennedy Slide of 1962
Answer
Kennedy Slide of 1962
The Kennedy Slide of 1962 was the U.S. market collapse also known by that name.
The episode ran from December 1961 to June 1962 and was the sharpest U.S. market decline since the 1929 crash at the time. The S&P 500 fell about 22.5 percent from its high to its low, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped roughly 26 percent.
The decline reflected concerns about economic growth, corporate earnings, inflation, and Cold War tensions. President John F. Kennedy's administration also confronted a dispute with the steel industry after major companies announced price increases in April 1962. Kennedy publicly criticized the increases, adding to uncertainty about government-business relations.
The nickname should not be confused with a single-day crash. Unlike Black Monday in 1987, the Kennedy Slide unfolded over several months. The market eventually stabilized, and U.S. economic expansion continued, although the period included recession concerns and geopolitical risk.
