Answer
The Alamo
Answer
The Alamo
The 1960 film starring John Wayne as Davy Crockett at the Alamo was The Alamo.
The Alamo is an epic Western war film about the 1836 siege and battle during the Texas Revolution. Wayne produced and directed the movie as well as playing Colonel Davy Crockett, the legendary Tennessee frontiersman who joins the defenders at the mission in San Antonio. Richard Widmark plays Jim Bowie, while Laurence Harvey portrays William Barret Travis.
The film dramatizes the defenders’ decision to hold the Alamo against the much larger Mexican army commanded by General Santa Anna. Its story combines historical events with Hollywood invention, including heightened dialogue, expanded personal conflicts, and a strongly heroic portrait of the defenders.
Wayne had wanted to make an Alamo film for years and eventually formed his own production company to protect the project. The production was unusually ambitious for its time, using 70mm Todd-AO photography and a long roadshow version running 202 minutes. The title is sometimes confused with later Alamo films, especially John Lee Hancock’s 2004 version, but the quiz’s John Wayne film is the 1960 production.
