The 1956 epic film starring Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean that spans decades in Texas is Giant.
Directed by George Stevens, Giant adapts Edna Ferber’s 1952 novel. Elizabeth Taylor plays Leslie Benedict, Rock Hudson plays Texas rancher Bick Benedict, and James Dean plays Jett Rink, a working ranch hand whose discovery of oil transforms his fortunes. The story follows the family, social conflicts, and changing Texas economy across several decades.
Giant was James Dean’s final completed film and the last of his three major leading-man roles. He died in a car crash in September 1955, before the film’s release, and received a posthumous Academy Award nomination for his performance. The film is often called an epic Western drama, but its focus also includes class, race, family power, and modernization. The Giant is not the film’s title; Rebel Without a Cause and East of Eden were Dean’s other two leading films.
