The composition presents the crucifixion from an unusual elevated angle. Christ appears suspended over a dark landscape and a body of water, while the cross is shown without the usual frontal viewpoint. The scene below is associated with Port Lligat, Dalí’s home area in Catalonia.

Dalí said the image was inspired by a drawing connected with the sixteenth-century Spanish mystic John of the Cross. The painting reflects Dalí’s postwar interest in religious subjects, classical technique, and scientific ideas about perspective.

The work is held by Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. It is sometimes confused with Corpus Hypercubus, another famous religious painting by Dalí, but that later work uses a cross formed from a hypercube net.
