Rio Grande was the first John Ford film to star both John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. Released in 1950, it paired Wayne as Lieutenant Colonel Kirby Yorke with O’Hara as his estranged wife, Kathleen.
The film was the third and final entry in Ford’s “Cavalry Trilogy,” following Fort Apache (1948) and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949). Wayne appeared in all three, but O’Hara joined the series only for Rio Grande. The story combines a cavalry campaign on the Texas–Mexico border with a family reconciliation involving Yorke, Kathleen, and their son.
The pairing became one of classic Hollywood’s most recognizable screen partnerships. Rio Grande was followed by The Quiet Man (1952), The Wings of Eagles (1957), McLintock! (1963), and Big Jake (1971). A common mix-up is The Quiet Man, which is often remembered as their first collaboration because of its celebrated Irish setting and romance. In fact, Rio Grande came first and was made partly because Republic Pictures wanted Ford to complete another film before producing The Quiet Man.
