Which 1950 film won Best Picture and features Bette Davis as an aging stage actress?
Answer
All About Eve
Answer
All About Eve
The 1950 film that won Best Picture and features Bette Davis as an aging stage actress is All About Eve.
Joseph L. Mankiewicz wrote and directed the drama, with Davis playing Margo Channing, a celebrated Broadway performer confronting age, insecurity and a changing theatrical world. Anne Baxter plays Eve Harrington, an apparently devoted admirer whose ambition gradually threatens Margo's career and relationships. George Sanders, Celeste Holm and Thelma Ritter are also central to the ensemble.
The screenplay grew from Mary Orr's short story “The Wisdom of Eve,” first published in 1946 and later adapted as a radio drama. Marilyn Monroe appears in one of her early film roles. The film is often confused with Sunset Boulevard, another major 1950 drama about an aging actress, but Gloria Swanson plays the former silent-film star Norma Desmond in that movie.
All About Eve received a record 14 Academy Award nominations at the time and won six, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. It premiered in New York on October 13, 1950.
