Which 1945 Allied operation was planned to invade southern Kyushu?
Answer
Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
Operation Olympic was the 1945 Allied plan to invade southern Kyushu.
Olympic was the first phase of Operation Downfall, the proposed invasion of Japan. It was intended to land Allied forces on southern Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four main islands. The operation was tentatively scheduled for November 1945 and would have established bases for a later advance toward the Tokyo region.
The plan reflected Allied expectations that Japan might reject surrender and continue fighting from its home islands. Military planners studied beaches, airfields, troop concentrations, naval support, and possible Japanese resistance. The invasion was canceled after Japan accepted the Allied terms in August 1945.
Olympic is frequently confused with Operation Coronet. Coronet was the second phase of Downfall and was planned for the Kanto Plain on Honshu, near Tokyo, in March 1946. Operation Downfall was the umbrella plan covering both operations. None of the three became a full-scale invasion of Japan because the surrender ended the need for the campaign.
