Which 1945 Allied declaration stated the terms Japan was urged to accept before its surrender?

The story behind the answer

The Potsdam Declaration stated the terms Japan was urged to accept before its 1945 surrender.

The United States, the United Kingdom, and China issued the declaration on July 26, 1945, while Allied leaders were meeting at Potsdam in occupied Germany. It demanded Japan’s unconditional surrender and warned that refusal would bring severe consequences. The Soviet Union did not initially sign because it was still neutral in the war against Japan.

Among other provisions, the declaration called for the elimination of militarism, the occupation of selected Japanese territory, the disarmament of Japanese forces, and the limitation of Japanese sovereignty to the home islands and other islands designated by the Allies. It also promised that Japan would not be permanently destroyed as a nation.

Japan’s government initially rejected the declaration publicly. After the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Soviet declaration of war, and internal political debate, Emperor Hirohito approved acceptance of its terms. Japan’s formal acceptance was later recorded in the surrender instrument signed aboard USS Missouri.
