Which 1943 Jewish resistance uprising took place in the Warsaw Ghetto?
Answer
Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
Answer
Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was the 1943 Jewish resistance uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto.
The revolt began on 19 April 1943, when German forces entered the ghetto to complete its destruction and deport the remaining inhabitants. Jewish fighters, including members of the Jewish Combat Organization and the Jewish Military Union, used limited weapons, barricades, and underground positions against a much stronger German force.
The uprising lasted until 16 May 1943. German forces systematically burned buildings and demolished the Great Synagogue of Warsaw. The revolt did not prevent the ghetto’s destruction, but it became the largest Jewish armed resistance action against Nazi Germany. It is distinct from the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, which was a broader Polish revolt outside the ghetto.
