René Magritte’s 1935 painting The False Mirror shows a giant eye whose dark pupil contains a reflection of a cloudy blue sky.

The image turns the eye into both a window and a barrier. It appears to reveal the world, yet the viewer cannot see the person who owns the eye or know whether the sky is truly outside it. This visual contradiction gives the painting its title.
