The 1932 horror film starring Boris Karloff as the ancient Egyptian Imhotep is The Mummy.
Universal Pictures released The Mummy in 1932 as a pre-Code supernatural horror film. Karloff plays Imhotep, a high priest who is buried alive after attempting to resurrect his dead lover, Princess Anck-es-en-Amon. He later returns under the modern identity Ardath Bey.
The film was directed by Karl Freund, best known at the time as a cinematographer, and co-starred Zita Johann as Helen Grosvenor. Helen resembles Imhotep’s lost princess, driving the film’s tragic supernatural romance. The story also introduces the fictional Scroll of Thoth, which gives Imhotep his power to return from death.
A common mix-up is with the 1999 film The Mummy, which also features an antagonist named Imhotep but has a different plot, tone, cast, and setting. The 1932 film is the original Universal Monsters version and runs for about 73 minutes.
