Which 1930 novel introduced Agatha Christie’s detective Miss Marple?

The story behind the answer

The Murder at the Vicarage introduced Agatha Christie’s detective Miss Marple in 1930.

The novel is set in the village of St. Mary Mead, where Colonel Lucius Protheroe is found dead in the vicar’s study. Miss Jane Marple, an observant local resident, recognizes connections between village behavior and criminal motives that others overlook.

Although Christie had already published Miss Marple short stories before the novel appeared, The Murder at the Vicarage was her first full-length book featuring the character. Later Miss Marple novels include The Body in the Library and A Murder Is Announced. The title is sometimes mistaken for a later Christie book because many of her works combine a village setting with a murder investigation.
