Which 1929 trading day is known as Black Tuesday?

The story behind the answer

Black Tuesday was October 29, 1929, one of the most notorious days of the Wall Street Crash.

On Black Tuesday, roughly 16 million shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, setting a trading-volume record at the time. Prices collapsed amid panic selling, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell about 12 percent. The decline followed Black Thursday on October 24 and a brief attempted recovery on October 25 and 28.

The crash did not single-handedly create the Great Depression, but it exposed severe weaknesses in the economy and financial system. Speculative buying, purchases on margin, falling industrial activity, and bank failures all contributed to the prolonged crisis that followed. The Dow eventually lost nearly 89 percent from its 1929 peak to its 1932 low.

Black Tuesday is sometimes used as shorthand for the entire 1929 crash. Strictly speaking, it refers to October 29, while the broader Wall Street Crash lasted across several major trading sessions.
