Which 1928 Disney cartoon introduced Minnie Mouse alongside Mickey Mouse?

The story behind the answer

The 1928 Disney cartoon Plane Crazy introduced Minnie Mouse alongside Mickey Mouse.

Plane Crazy was the first Mickey Mouse cartoon produced, although Steamboat Willie became the first released Mickey cartoon. Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks created the short during the early development of the new character. Its aviation theme reflected the popularity of pilot Charles Lindbergh, whose 1927 transatlantic flight had captured worldwide attention.

Minnie appears as Mickey’s companion during his attempt to impress her with an improvised airplane. The pair’s relationship was established immediately, but Minnie was not simply a background character: she actively resists Mickey’s unwanted advances and eventually escapes the chaotic flight. This early portrayal differs from some later cartoons, where Minnie is more often presented as Mickey’s sweetheart and a social equal.

A common mix-up is assuming Steamboat Willie introduced both characters because it was the first Mickey cartoon released to the public. Plane Crazy was actually made first and received its public release later, in 1929.
