The 1922 silent German horror film featuring the vampire Count Orlok is *Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror*.
Directed by F. W. Murnau and starring Max Schreck as Orlok, the film follows estate agent Thomas Hutter, who travels to Transylvania and discovers his mysterious client is a vampire. Orlok later brings plague and death to the fictional German town of Wisborg.
*Nosferatu* is an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel *Dracula*. To distinguish the film from the novel, the filmmakers changed names: Count Dracula became Count Orlok, Jonathan Harker became Thomas Hutter, and Mina became Ellen. Florence Stoker, the author’s widow, successfully sued over the copyright violation, and a court ordered the film’s prints destroyed. Several copies survived.
The film is often confused with *Dracula*, but that title refers to Stoker’s novel and its later official adaptations. *Nosferatu* is a landmark of German Expressionist cinema and helped establish visual conventions for modern vampire horror.
