RMS Titanic was the largest ocean liner in the world when it sank on its maiden voyage in April 1912. The White Star Line ship struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sank in the early hours of 15 April.
Titanic was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast and completed in 1912. It was one of three Olympic-class ocean liners, alongside Olympic and Britannic. Titanic was designed for luxurious transatlantic travel between Southampton and New York.
The ship carried more than 2,200 people, including passengers and crew, but had lifeboat capacity for only about 1,178 people. More than 1,500 people died, making the disaster one of the deadliest peacetime maritime losses at the time.
The wreck was discovered in 1985 by a joint American-French expedition led by Robert Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel. It lies roughly 3,800 metres below the North Atlantic surface and has since been studied extensively.
