Which 1895 Frank Wedekind play helped inspire Pabst’s 1929 film Pandora’s Box?

The story behind the answer

Frank Wedekind’s 1895 play Earth Spirit helped inspire Pabst’s 1929 film Pandora’s Box.

Earth Spirit, originally titled Erdgeist in German, introduced Lulu, the central figure later developed across Wedekind’s Lulu dramas. Its themes of sexuality, social hypocrisy, and destructive fascination provided major material for the film.

Pabst’s movie also draws on Wedekind’s later play Pandora’s Box, published in 1904. Together, the two plays form the dramatic foundation of the 1929 adaptation. The movie reshapes their stage material through silent-film acting, visual composition, and Louise Brooks’s performance.

Earth Spirit should not be confused with the ancient Greek myth itself. It is a modern European drama that uses the Pandora association in its title and themes, rather than retelling Hesiod’s account of the gods and the jar.
