Which 1889 Paris landmark was designed by Gustave Eiffel’s engineering company?
Answer
Eiffel Tower
Answer
Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower was designed by Gustave Eiffel’s engineering company and completed in Paris in 1889.
The tower was built as the entrance arch for the Exposition Universelle, a world’s fair held to celebrate the centennial of the French Revolution. Construction began in 1887 and finished in time for the opening on 31 March 1889. The iron structure was assembled from more than 18,000 individual parts using millions of rivets, demonstrating the possibilities of large-scale nineteenth-century metal engineering.
Gustave Eiffel was the prominent public figure associated with the project, but the original design was developed by engineers Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier, with architectural input from Stephen Sauvestre. Many Parisian artists initially criticized the tower’s appearance, and it was intended to be temporary. Its popularity led to its preservation. The Eiffel Tower was the world’s tallest man-made structure from its completion until 1930, when New York’s Chrysler Building surpassed it. It remains one of France’s most visited landmarks.
