Which 1840 British postage stamp helped mailed Valentines surge?

The story behind the answer

The 1840 British postage stamp that helped mailed Valentines surge was the Penny Black.

The Penny Black was Britain’s first adhesive postage stamp used in a public postal system. It carried a one-penny face value and allowed a qualifying letter weighing up to half an ounce to travel at a uniform rate, regardless of distance.

Before postal reform, sending letters was costly and often required the recipient to pay. The new prepaid system made mailing a Valentine cheaper, simpler and more discreet. Anonymous cards became easier to send, helping expand the market for romantic correspondence.

The stamp was first issued in 1840 and featured a profile of the young Queen Victoria. It was printed in black and used red cancellation ink, but that combination created a practical problem: the cancellations could be removed and stamps reused. In 1841, it was replaced by the Penny Red, but the Penny Black remained the stamp associated with the Valentine boom.
