Which 1807 treaty ended the War of the Fourth Coalition?
Answer
Treaties of Tilsit
Answer
Treaties of Tilsit
The 1807 Treaties of Tilsit ended the War of the Fourth Coalition. They were two agreements concluded in Tilsit, in July 1807, after Napoleon’s decisive victory over the Russian army at Friedland.
The first treaty, signed on 7 July by Napoleon and Tsar Alexander I, ended hostilities between France and Russia. A second treaty, signed on 9 July, imposed harsh terms on Prussia, which lost roughly half its prewar territory. Napoleon reorganized some of these lands into French-aligned states, including the Kingdom of Westphalia and the Duchy of Warsaw.
Tilsit reshaped European diplomacy as well as borders. Russia agreed to cooperate with Napoleon’s Continental System against Britain, while France and Russia temporarily became partners. The settlement is often confused with the Treaty of Pressburg, which ended Austria’s participation in the War of the Third Coalition in 1805, not the Fourth Coalition.
