Which 1807 battle led directly to the Treaties of Tilsit?
Answer
Battle of Friedland
Answer
Battle of Friedland
The Battle of Friedland led directly to the Treaties of Tilsit in 1807. Napoleon’s French army defeated the Russian army under General Levin August von Bennigsen at Friedland on 14 June, compelling Tsar Alexander I to seek negotiations.
The battle took place during the War of the Fourth Coalition. Russian forces had been operating in East Prussia and attempted to challenge Napoleon, but Bennigsen’s army became exposed near Friedland. Napoleon concentrated his forces and launched a major attack after identifying the Russian army’s vulnerable position near the Alle River.
Friedland’s defeat persuaded the Russian leadership that continuing the war was dangerous. Napoleon and Alexander met soon afterward, and their negotiations produced the Treaties of Tilsit in July. The Battle of Eylau, fought earlier in 1807, was a far more indecisive clash and did not directly produce the settlement; Wagram belonged to the later War of the Fifth Coalition.
