Which 1783 treaty recognized American independence after the Revolutionary War?
Answer
Treaty of Paris
Answer
Treaty of Paris
The Treaty of Paris recognized American independence after the Revolutionary War.
Signed in 1783, the treaty ended the war between Great Britain and the United States. Britain formally recognized the United States as a sovereign nation and accepted boundaries that extended west to the Mississippi River, north to the Great Lakes, and south to Spanish Florida.
The Declaration of Independence announced the colonies’ separation in 1776, but it did not itself secure international recognition or end the fighting. The Treaty of Paris supplied the diplomatic settlement after the American military victory at Yorktown and subsequent negotiations.
The name can cause confusion because several agreements are called the Treaty of Paris. The 1783 treaty is the one associated with the American Revolution. The United States later signed other treaties with Britain, including the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812.
