Which 1783 peace agreement formally ended the American Revolutionary War?
Answer
Treaty of Paris
Answer
Treaty of Paris
The Treaty of Paris, signed in 1783, formally ended the American Revolutionary War.
American and British representatives signed the treaty in Paris on September 3, 1783. Britain recognized the independence of the United States and established boundaries for the new nation, extending west to the Mississippi River, north to the Great Lakes, and south to Spanish Florida.
The American negotiating team included Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, John Jay, and Henry Laurens. The agreement also addressed debts, property, prisoners, and Loyalists, although several provisions created continuing disputes after the war.
The treaty is distinct from the 1783 armistice and from the surrender at Yorktown in 1781. Yorktown was a decisive military event, but the Treaty of Paris supplied the formal diplomatic settlement that ended the conflict between Britain and the United States.
