Which 1781 siege ended with the major British surrender at Yorktown?
Answer
Siege of Yorktown
Answer
Siege of Yorktown
The Siege of Yorktown ended with the major British surrender at Yorktown in 1781.
American and French forces surrounded the British army commanded by General Charles Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia. General George Washington led the Continental Army, while French troops under the Comte de Rochambeau and a French fleet helped close off escape and reinforcement routes.
The siege began in late September 1781. Allied troops captured key British positions, including Redoubts 9 and 10, and tightened the investment around the town. Cornwallis surrendered on October 19, 1781, giving up about 8,000 soldiers.
Yorktown did not legally end the war; peace negotiations continued afterward, and fighting did not stop everywhere immediately. Its military and political impact was decisive, however. British leaders lost support for continuing a major offensive war, leading to the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
