Which 1781 siege ended the major land fighting of the American Revolutionary War?
Answer
Siege of Yorktown
Answer
Siege of Yorktown
The Siege of Yorktown ended the major land fighting of the American Revolutionary War.
The siege took place in Virginia from September 28 to October 19, 1781. American forces under George Washington joined French troops commanded by Rochambeau, while French naval forces under François de Grasse blocked British relief by sea. Together, the allied forces surrounded the British army led by Charles Cornwallis.
Allied engineers built parallel siege lines and brought artillery close enough to bombard the British defenses. After several redoubts were captured, Cornwallis recognized that his position could not be maintained and surrendered his army on October 19.
The war did not end instantly at Yorktown. Fighting continued in other locations, and peace negotiations took time. The Treaty of Paris, signed in 1783, formally ended the conflict and recognized American independence. Yorktown is nevertheless treated as the effective end of major land operations and is central to the history commemorated by America250.
