Which 1781 engagement was the final major land battle of the American Revolutionary War?
Answer
Siege of Yorktown
Answer
Siege of Yorktown
The Siege of Yorktown was the final major land engagement of the American Revolutionary War.
The siege took place in Virginia from September 28 to October 19, 1781. American forces under George Washington joined French troops commanded by the Comte de Rochambeau, while a French fleet under the Comte de Grasse blocked British relief by sea.
The allied army surrounded the British position commanded by Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis. American and French troops captured key outer redoubts, moved their artillery closer, and intensified the bombardment. Cornwallis requested surrender terms on October 17, and the surrender ceremony occurred two days later.
Yorktown did not instantly end every military action. Fighting continued at sea and in other places, but the defeat led to peace negotiations. The Treaty of Paris, signed in 1783, formally recognized the independence of the United States.
