Which 1777 battle led to British General John Burgoyne's surrender to the Continental Army?

The story behind the answer

The Battles of Saratoga led to British General John Burgoyne's surrender to the Continental Army in 1777.

The campaign consisted mainly of two major engagements: the Battle of Freeman's Farm on September 19 and the Battle of Bemis Heights on October 7. American forces under Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold resisted Burgoyne's attempt to move south from Canada and divide the rebellious colonies.

Burgoyne surrendered his army at Saratoga on October 17, 1777. The victory was a major strategic and diplomatic turning point because it demonstrated that the Continental Army could defeat a substantial British force in open combat.

News of Saratoga encouraged France to deepen its support for the American cause. In February 1778, France signed the Treaty of Alliance with the United States and openly entered the war against Britain. Saratoga is sometimes treated as one battle, but the name commonly refers to the connected 1777 engagements and the campaign ending in Burgoyne's surrender.
