Which 1777 battle became the first major American victory of the Revolutionary War?

The story behind the answer

The Battle of Saratoga became the first major American victory of the Revolutionary War in 1777.

The Battles of Saratoga were fought in the Hudson River Valley of New York. American forces first checked General John Burgoyne’s British campaign at Freeman’s Farm on September 19, 1777, and then defeated him at Bemis Heights on October 7. Burgoyne surrendered his army on October 17.

The victory stopped Britain’s attempt to divide New England from the other colonies. It also demonstrated that the Continental Army could defeat a major British field force. The result persuaded France to enter the war openly on the American side. The Franco-American alliance brought troops, supplies, loans, and naval support that became crucial later in the conflict.

Saratoga is sometimes treated as one battle, but historians commonly describe two connected engagements followed by Burgoyne’s surrender. It should also not be confused with the 1781 victory at Yorktown, which ended major land operations. Saratoga’s diplomatic impact made it a turning point in the struggle for independence.
