Which 1777 American victory persuaded France that the Revolution could succeed?

The story behind the answer

The Battle of Saratoga was the 1777 American victory that persuaded France the Revolution could succeed.

The Saratoga campaign in New York culminated in the surrender of British General John Burgoyne’s army to American forces led by General Horatio Gates. The decisive engagements occurred on September 19 and October 7, 1777, followed by the surrender on October 17.

The victory had major diplomatic consequences. France had already supplied covert aid to the Americans, but Saratoga demonstrated that the Continental forces could defeat a major British army. France then openly allied with the United States through treaties signed in 1778.

Saratoga was not the final battle of the Revolution, and the American victory did not immediately end the war. French money, troops, ships, and military supplies later played a major role, especially during the Yorktown campaign.
