Which 1777 American Revolutionary War battles helped persuade France to ally with the American colonies?
Answer
Battles of Saratoga
Answer
Battles of Saratoga
The Battles of Saratoga helped persuade France to ally with the American colonies in 1777.
The fighting took place near Saratoga, New York, in two major engagements: the Battle of Freeman’s Farm on September 19 and the Battle of Bemis Heights on October 7. American forces were commanded by General Horatio Gates, while British troops were led by General John Burgoyne.
Burgoyne’s army had marched south from Canada as part of a British plan to control the Hudson River Valley and divide New England from the other colonies. After suffering heavy losses and becoming surrounded by a larger American force, Burgoyne surrendered his army on October 17, 1777.
The American victory was a major diplomatic success. It demonstrated that the colonial forces could defeat a large British army, encouraging France to enter the war openly as an American ally. The resulting French military, naval, and financial support was especially important to the eventual American victory at Yorktown in 1781. Saratoga is often described as a turning point of the Revolutionary War.
