Which 1776 battle was the largest of the American Revolutionary War?

The story behind the answer

The Battle of Long Island was the largest battle of the American Revolutionary War.

Fought on August 27, 1776, the battle took place around the western end of Long Island, in what is now Brooklyn, New York. It was also called the Battle of Brooklyn or the Battle of Brooklyn Heights.

British and Hessian forces under General William Howe defeated George Washington’s Continental Army. The British victory gave them control of Long Island and access to the strategically important port of New York, which they occupied for most of the war.

Although the Americans suffered a serious defeat, Washington managed to evacuate his army from Brooklyn Heights to Manhattan during the night of August 29–30. The withdrawal succeeded without losing supplies or a single life during the evacuation. The battle is sometimes confused with the Battle of Bunker Hill, which was fought earlier in 1775, or the later American victories at Saratoga and Yorktown.
