Which 1775 battle was fought on the Charlestown Peninsula during the Siege of Boston?
Answer
Battle of Bunker Hill
Answer
Battle of Bunker Hill
The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought on the Charlestown Peninsula during the Siege of Boston in 1775.
The battle took place on June 17, 1775, after colonial forces fortified Breed’s Hill, a position closer to Boston than Bunker Hill. British troops attacked the heights in repeated assaults and eventually captured them, making the battle a British victory in territory.
The British suffered more than 1,000 casualties, including many officers, while the colonial forces lost roughly 450 men. The heavy British losses demonstrated that inexperienced American troops could stand against regular soldiers.
Because most of the fighting occurred on Breed’s Hill, the name can be confusing. The battle is nevertheless conventionally known as Bunker Hill and became an important early event in the American Revolutionary War.
