Which 1775 battle was fought mainly on Breed's Hill during the Siege of Boston?
Answer
Battle of Bunker Hill
Answer
Battle of Bunker Hill
The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought mainly on Breed's Hill on June 17, 1775, during the Siege of Boston. Although the battle bears Bunker Hill's name, most of the fighting occurred on the neighboring Breed's Hill.
Colonial forces under William Prescott fortified Breed's Hill to control the Charlestown Peninsula and threaten British positions in Boston. British troops commanded by William Howe attacked the fortifications in repeated assaults. The British eventually captured the position, but they suffered heavy casualties.
The battle was technically a British victory because British forces held the ground afterward. However, the high British losses demonstrated that colonial forces could stand against regular troops. The engagement also encouraged continued resistance during the early months of the American Revolutionary War.
The famous instruction “Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes” is traditionally associated with the battle, but historians debate who said it and the exact wording. The event is also distinct from Lexington and Concord, which began the fighting two months earlier.
